The Early Bulb Onion Temp.
Primos (Allium cepa) is a herbaceous plant belonging to the Allium family, featuring a root system made up of numerous fibrous roots emerging from a disc-shaped stem.
This stem consists of numerous nodes and short internodes, from which the leaves emerge.
The leaves are clearly divided into two parts: a basal part that thickens due to the accumulation of storage substances forming the bulb, and a terminal part that is green and photosynthetically active.
The shapes and colors of the bulbs vary significantly among different varieties, all characterized by a typical odor and taste with notable bactericidal power.
- Sow at the right time according to the variety cycle and cultivation area.
- Can be done in seedbeds (6-8 gr/m2) or direct sowing with bare seed (5-6 Kg/Ha) or pelleted seed (600,000-1,000,000 pellets/Ha).
- Choose the most fertile fields, avoiding clay soils.
- Prepare the soil well, ensuring a fine surface layer (2cm).
- Utilize a rich nitrogen and potassium base fertilizer.
If manure is used, it is preferable to apply it 3-4 months before sowing. - Do not apply more nitrogen when the bulb is midway through development.
- Keep the field free from weeds, as they can quickly invade the crop and significantly affect yield due to the limited leaf area.
- In spring, control for mildew, botrytis (in rainy years), and thrips throughout the cultivation.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides.
- A week before harvest, a broad-spectrum antifungal treatment is recommended to ensure clean bulbs before storage.
- It is crucial that the onion has lost excess water before harvest, so the last irrigation should be omitted.
Carefully harvest as soon as possible once pulled up.
It's essential to store the onions in optimal ventilation and temperature conditions to ensure excellent preservation within the characteristics of each variety.
Primos Onion Variety:
This is an extra early variety with a very sweet flavor.
The bulbs are of good size, inverted conical shape, with a golden exterior color, while the inner color is white-yellow.
It has short shelf life.
Profusely adapted and used for harvesting tender onions.
Sow from late July to October in seedbeds.
Transplant when the plants reach pencil thickness at a spacing of 40 x 10 cm for tender onions, wider spacing for bulb harvest.
Harvest tender onions in the late winter and spring, and bulbs in June-July.
